I woke up to blue skies and broke camp. I rode the rest of the way through Avenue of the Giants. I met a cyclist named Sarah from Vancouver and we rode together for awhile. I told her I was headed to Fort Bragg and she said that was an ambitious goal.
The road went inland through some grassy areas and then into a mountainous region. There were a lot of switchbacks and elevation change. IT got dark when I was in the mountains. The hills were huge but I had a host in Fort Bragg and I was determined to get there.
I was listening to White Fang by Jack London on audiobook. It was a long ride in the mountains in the dark and I had to use my brakes going downhill because the hills were steep. Finally I reached the coast and the stars were out. There was a small band of orange light on the horizon and I could hear the waves breaking.
I crossed rolling hills for another 30 miles and finally reached Fort Bragg. My hosts were Darren and Heidi. They were my next door neighbor in Alaska’s kin and they had 2 young boys.
It was 10pm when I arrived and I talked to my hosts for a little while before I went to bed.
